Peyronie’s Disease Treatment in Oakville
What is Peyronie’s disease?
Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which a man has a bent penis. The curvature is caused by fibrous scar tissue called plaque — unrelated to the plaque that builds up and clogs arteries — building up on the penis.
Penises vary in size and shape, and slightly curved erections may occur without the presence of Peyronie’s disease. The key difference is that Peyronie’s disease often results in a significant bend or curve that may cause pain. In the most severe cases of Peyronie’s disease, having sex may be impossible.
What are the symptoms and signs of Peyronie’s disease?
Peyronie’s disease does not occur overnight; it is a disease that slowly becomes worse over time. The symptoms may not be immediately clear. The disease has two phases: the acute phase and the chronic phase.
The acute phase happens earlier in the disease. Symptoms at this point include pain, changes in the curve or bend of the penis, shortening of the penis, and/or deformity. Scar tissue build-up may occur on one side of the penis and typically feels like small lumps. Erectile dysfunction is an early symptom of Peyronie’s disease, and many men with Peyronie’s develop full-on erectile dysfunction.
In the chronic phase, the symptoms in the active phase stabilize, meaning your penis will not bend or curve any further than it has. Some men will no longer experience pain during the chronic phase.
What causes Peyronie’s disease?
The causes of Peyronie’s disease are not fully understood or known, but there are some factors that may be part of the cause. It’s commonly believed that Peyronie’s disease is caused by repeated injury to the penis. For just about every injury, scar tissue will develop as part of the healing process. In the case of Peyronie’s disease, the scar tissue forms incorrectly after an injury to the penis.
Injuries aren’t the only potential risk of Peyronie’s disease. Your risk for Peyronie’s may be increased if you have a relative who has the condition. The likelihood of having Peyronie’s disease also increases with age. Certain tissue disorders also put you at higher risk of having Peyronie’s.
There are no known ways to prevent Peyronie’s disease.
What Peyronie’s disease treatment options are available in Oakville?
The treatment available to you will depend on how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms of Peyronie’s disease.
If you suffer from Peyronie’s disease, these treatment options are available to you:
- Shockwave therapy: Known as GAINSWave, this therapy breaks up the fibrous scar tissue that causes Peyronie’s disease by using sound waves.
- Platelet Rich Plasma therapy: PRP or the P-Shot takes the healing properties in your own blood & it puts them exactly where we want to accelerate healing, directly in the scar tissue.
What is GAINSWave®?
GAINSWave® is the commercial name for shockwave therapy, a nonsurgical, noninvasive, drug-free treatment that uses acoustic sound waves to break up the scar tissue that is causing the curvature of the penis.
What makes GAINSWave® a good option for treating Peyronie’s disease?
Unlike the majority of Peyronie’s disease treatment options, GAINSWave® combats the root cause of Peyronie’s disease: scar tissue build-up. It’s also the safest treatment option for Peyronie’s, as it is noninvasive, nonsurgical, and drug-free. There are no major adverse side effects and your recovery time will be brief. The GAINSWave® procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes each session, and it may take anywhere from 6 to 12 treatment sessions, depending on the severity of your case.
While that may sound like a lot of sessions, GAINSWave® is worth it. It may save you thousands compared to other treatment options. The results of GAINSWave® last longer than those other options. Keep in mind that it’s common for men with Peyronie’s to develop erectile dysfunction. Since it treats Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction at the same time, GAINSWave® is effectively saving you time and money.
