The objective of this study was to test the efficacy and safety of oral L-citrulline supplementation in improving erection firmness in men with mild erectile dysfunction (ED). A single blind study was performed where a total of 24 men experiencing mild ED were given a placebo for 1 month, and then given 1.5g of L-citrulline daily for another month. Erection harness score, number of intercourses per month, treatment satisfaction and adverse events were recorded.
The findings of the study demonstrated that only 8.3% of men reported an increase in erection hardness scores during the placebo phase, and in contrast, 50% reported improvement in scores while taking L-citrulline. The mean number of intercourses monthly was also higher during the L-citrulline phase of the study when compared to the placebo phase. All 24 participants concluded the study without adverse events, and all patients reporting improvement in erection hardness scores reported being very satisfied.
